The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
